The Tale of Silk

Like a bridge between two cultures, the scarf De passage à Paris is on exhibition with a mix of Chinese and Western calligraphies. This is the first allusion of Hilton McConnico, who – throughout the exhibition “The Tale of Silk” – has played in his own unique and poetic fashion with the connections and correlations between the birthplace of this noble material and Hermès, which has been expertly printing it for seventy years. Stylist, designer, photographer, filmmaker and set designer, this American artist in Paris is keen on telling colorful stories… Especially about silk, having designed the exhibition “Dream woven with silk” for Hermès. in 1996, an exhibition that travelled around the globe. “The Tale of Silk” exhibition - designed specially in September 2007 for the combined celebration of the 10th anniversary of Hermès in China and the 70th anniversary of Hermès scarves - impressed visitors with Hilton’s creation, unique humor and joy of child.

Today, at Beijing Today Art Museum, Hermès has great pleasure in inviting you to experience a world of scarves again, in which Hilton McConnico presents a dialogue between Chinese antique pieces and Hermes scarves of his own choosing. A square of concrete, extracted from the ceiling and effortlessly suspended by thin wires, hangs over a very small egg. Through the skylight, clouds in the sky gallop along like the inspiration of Hermès. This piece encompasses all the magic of the scenography of Hilton McConnico, who succeeds in respecting the singular nature of this material while letting his imagination wander, echoing the inventiveness of the House. The scarves En duo and Au coeur de la vie fully express this profusion of ideas by flowing over the edges of their frames. There is also the famous Bolduc, 24 Faubourg, H cinétique, and Balles de golf II, which becomes animated, melting into the landscape and revising its use, following the example of woman who play with their scarves…“The Tale of Silk” is an apt name for this exhibition. Reflecting the spirit of its designer, it is full of? humour, colour, sensations and poetry.

To enter “The Jockeys Circle”, one must clear a way through drapes of silk, an invitation to sensuality. After the sense of sight, the sense of touch is invoked. Then taste, and most importantly the taste buds, which are brought to life with the Gastronomie scarf. Here and there, two small niches hung with red velvet display a fork and knife on one side and chopsticks on the other… Hermès scarves tell stories that Hilton McConnico reinterprets with his vivid imagination. They make his mind gallop at full speed, giving rise to a thousand personal interpretations in multiple colour combinations. In a room split in two symmetrical parts, Hilton McConnico demonstrates “The Graphical Force” of seven scarves, unveiling the details of their motifs in black and white, and then in colour. Next, he highlights their charms with large bees gathering nectar and pollen from the Fleurs de fuchsia and Red Berries prints. Spinning dancers from Bells du Mexique break free, inviting the visitor to join in the dance. Mounted on huge Chinese lanterns, twelve different scarf designs shed light on various rhythms and cultures.

In another setting, all the magic of silk, its finesse, suppleness and hold, weave through three hundred sixty sabres, illustrating the paradox of this material, as delicate as it is strong.

Is there a solution to “The Silk Equation”? Using the scarves ? vos crayons, Fils conducteurs and Mikados, Hilton McConnico provides an answer tinged with humor. A few pieces of white chalk allow for many more to be imagined… With Hilton McConnico, the possibilities are endless and the imagination becomes an infinite playground to be explored in all its various facets. This is why, at the request of Hermès, he incorporated the personal vision of contemporary Chinese artists in his work.

Artist Ding Yi entered into the spirit of the game, designing an exclusive scarf, The Rhythm of China, printed with a vast number of small colourful checks, as in his paintings.

Film director Li Yu made an art film, “Silk Tide”, with one of the greatest dancers and choreographers in China, Huang Doudou, who leads the dance with a piece of red silk, bringing it to life and making it waltz gracefully and elegantly as if it were a partner.
