如果说具像的绘画作品好比文学的小说,那么抽象的绘画一定是诗歌了。林燮展,香港出生,旅居马来西亚,英国,美国,来到上海。他的抽象作品色彩鲜亮,创作风格自由奔放;他在艺术方面的造诣还有吉他弹奏和作词作曲。此次在顶层画廊展出的是林燮展先生最近创作的蓝色系列水彩纸平面抽象作品,包含他的诗歌意味。

Spiral; they assume the position of “the mortal coil”, which parallels the momeutum of life; for where a dynamic form of the circle allows to spread over all surfaces and dimensions. It never ever breaks its form, it merely continues into altered and bigger spheres.
In “ The blue Rose”(oil on canvas, 1996)Lam creates a two panel painting set against each other. They are shaped in irregular geometric forms. It is the spiral that holds the two together. He uses contrasting tonal qualities and juxtapositioning asymmetic shapes in order to capture the essence of constant movement, ventures into a conditional state. Immediately I am reminded of the relevance of Lam’s work and how we are affected by the monumental changes we experience daily.

Local art lovers are being introduced to the work of Walter Lam through the abstract paintings in his Hexagram series now on show in A Room with a View gallery on NanJing Road.
Born in HongKong and brought up in Kampar, Malaysia, Lam moved art school at Goldsmiths College . He went to NewYork in 1983 where he was part of the modernist fervor of that mecca in the world of visual art.
The parallels to his own nomadic existence since his youth----he is now in his 50s----seem obvious in the sentiments and philosophy of life that he displays in his chosen form of artistic expressions.
“I first came to Shanghai in 2003,” Lam says. “The influence of the Orient here is all expressed through my artworks.”
Now studying Chinese at Shanghai’s Jiaotong University and painting in his small studio, Lam likes the easygoing lifestyle of the city.
“For a apainter like me, it’s very interesting to see when concepts are clear and various initially determined colors are mixed,”he says.
“In the when the painting is still wet, the feeling is like that of a composer or a conductor or the players of an orchestra when they have to play their instruments in harmony.”
Lam is enamored with “composing the melody” on his canvaese with light and darkness, impulse and instincts under a free rein of discipline. For example, in one of his paintings, the vermilion warmth is at odds with the cold of the blue and the more mysterious universal forms that offset the dark grids of the diamond shape. One feels the movement of the artist’s arm across the surface of the canvas even within the very precise turn of te motif.
“I am particularly interested in my recent Hexagram series,”he says.”Each piece is one episode but it keeps in harmony with the rest.It is more like, for example,a group of people recently introduced over dinner getting to know each other and making the effort of exchanging histories and opinions.”
It is all quite complex to hear but delightful to see.
