2006 has been 14 years later from the birth of the “Cartoon Generation”。
Perhaps, our disputation over the old “Cartoon Generation” and new “Cartoon Generation” seems not much necessary while those groups born from the 70s to 80s concerns more that—what we need is no other than” Cartoon Spirit”。
“icon” with the dictionary definition as “image, idol”, has the interpretation in the Orthodox Church that only saint or respected figure deserves his own icon so that Jesus, the blood covered cross and thorn crown could accomplish the best over this meaning. However, the four artists in this exhibition obviously has prepared their own expression---the naive doll, the unbridled heaven, treacherous “bubble gum”…coincidentally, all those works are reflecting an overall theme: it’s time to turn our attention from the superficial “Carbonization” of artistic works to the hidden spiritual dimension behind concrete images.
Consumption Era came along with its own image album---automobile, fast food, animation cartoon, overwhelming commercials, etc. whereas it’s early to state that those consumption-culture soaked artist could only identify with cartoon and game.
Hereby among aesthetic pleasure, fair images, profound thoughts, cultural persistence brought by our artists, everything gets so sensational…
