“九色之荼”
——2007当代油画作品九人展

大兴艺术空间的九位艺术家在73画廊办展，策展人田军兄嘱我作序，告诉我说，九位艺术家为这次展览想了个名目：九色之荼。我听了不禁会心一笑。俗语有“酒色之徒”之说，这谐音实在化得妙。“酒色”之说，虽见贬义，却是沉溺之说。见投入，见痴迷，用到艺术的追求上，不独见出艺术家对艺术的热爱和沉溺，也见出自我的清醒和个性的张扬（“九”既是九位之说，亦是各自之意，是见个性，“色”谓“颜色”，既切画家本色，也见自我肯定张扬之意）。“酒色”之说，亦是自我放纵之说，与艺术家追求自由，放浪形骸，不事世俗本质相近。至于“荼”字，自是“如火如荼”意思，正见出九位艺术家对艺术的热爱、痴迷和用功之勤之力。
九位艺术家分别是关键、何宏伟、李光林、母军、王飞、魏超、吴悠、肖千、谢仁辉，其中除了多年前得一面之缘，给我留下深刻印象和备多好感的母军兄外，其余八位并不熟悉，但从田军兄带来他们的作品资料，却不难看出他们各自造谐的深厚，而他们以“九色之荼”自许，自是自知自信之说。
对艺术家和艺术家的作品，各人有各人的评判和理解，任何个人的评论或都是不周全的，了解他们最好的途径，只有真诚的面对和用心的体味，我无意把自己的个人看法破坏观者的兴味。他们的展览在即，关心他们，与他们相友爱熟悉的朋友们，或是与他们并不相熟却有兴趣了解他们的人们，不妨移移贵步，亲自到展览现场感受一下，“真诚的面对和用心的体味”，领受九位艺术家的“九色之荼”。
“荼”之一说，除了上面所指，亦有祝福美好之意，在此也借意发挥，祝九位艺术家的展览成功，更祝九位艺术家的艺术事业如火如荼，蒸蒸日上。

The Flourishing of Nine Colours---Painting show by nine contemporary Chinese painters

I am honoured to be given the opportunity to write the foreword to this brochure by Mr. Tian Jun, a talented and aspiring designer of this show. I can not help having an understanding smile when I was told that the nine painters named their show as “the Flourishing of Nine Colours”(九色之荼in Chinese) because “the Flourishing of Nine Colours”(“Jiu se zhi tu” in Chinese pronunciation) is the homophone of another phrase ---酒色之徒in Chinese, which means young men who lust after wine and women. Though lusting has a negative meaning in the phrase, here it means indulging and devoting all heart into art. The name also shows the painters’ self-awareness and their individual characters since “nine” here means nine individuals and “colour” means their own unique characters. Here, “Jiu se” (which means wine and women) indicates artists’ freedom in pursuing their ideals and their rebel to social conventions. Moreover, “Tu” implies the flourishing of their paintings, which also suggests their enthusiasm for art, their devotion to art, and their efforts and hard-working in pursuing ideals of art.
The nine painters are Guan Jian, He Hongwei, Li Guanglin, Mu Jun, Wang Fei, Wei Chao, Wu You, Xiao Qian, and Xie Renhui. Though I only know one of them---Mu Jun, I can see the other eight painters’ attainments and genius from the materials of their paintings from which we can see the name “Flourishing of Nine Colours ” really indicates their self confidence and self awareness.
Since we hold different views and understandings on different artist and his or her art work, no one can give a whole picture of them by simply making comments on them. Therefore, the best way to understand their art is to face them sincerely and to appreciate them with your heart. And I have no intention to spoil your interest and taste by my comments. With the coming of the show, I hope all the friends who love art and paintings, whether you are familiar with them or not, shall manage time to have a visit to their show and to taste the “flourishing of nine colours”. Besides all the meaning mentioned above, “flourishing” also signifies best wishes and blessing. Here, I would like to express my blessing to the nine painters. May the painting show a success and their art flourish and bloom, meanwhile.
