　　作为西方世界的他者，中国是世界的异数。五千年、五十年如此，改革开放二十年，亦是如此。全世界都试图理解中国，有野心的中国艺术家，应该意识到身处其中的优势，思索并用自己的方式把握这个时代。这里展出的两组八幅作品，是刘杰对当下中国的思索和表达。他对时代符号的敏锐捕捉和巧妙使用，确证了绘画同样可以宏观地反映一个时代。

　　这是一个邓开启的时代，是实用主义的“猫论”统治的时代。然而当刘杰给黑猫白猫们穿上富有意味的不同服装时，这些伸出大拇指夸耀自己才是好猫的众猫们却向观者提出了一个严肃的问题：究竟谁是好猫？

　　这还是一个全球化的时代，赤裸的微软女郎仿佛巴黎街头的自由女神，引导国人奔向可口可乐、麦当劳和好莱坞打造的商业未来，这个貌似不可逆转的全球化、同质化浪潮，让人欢喜让人忧。然而刘杰笔下无面孔的芸芸众生各不相同的脚部装饰，却分明泄露了一个事实：全球化远未实现，同质化永难抵达。

　　刘杰舞台美术的背景，让他习惯用大画幅、大色块、抽象形象来表现。这无疑有助于凸显当代中国粗鄙化的现实，也让作者晦暗不明的价值判断露出冰山一角。

　　rom an occidental point of view, China is one of the most exotic and different country in the world. Here is the breaking off… A 5,000 years History, the fight for freedom in the 1930’s, the 20th Century. People from all over the world go discovering the Middle Kingdom. And then, Chinese artists need to understand this gap, to think up and mold news tools in order to understand this new period.

　　NewB gallery puts two groups of eight works of art on public view, China’s reflections according to Liu Jie. To represent his time, Liu Jie uses ingenious and keen symbols, proving that painting allows people to understand a macroscopic time.

　　The father of this movement is Deng Xiaoping with his pragmatic “theory of the cat”. However, when the Liu Jie’s black and white cats put on various full of sense clothes, their thumbs point at us as good cats among the others, questioning the viewer about the meaning of “good cat”.

　　We move with the globalisation’s time. Microsoft’s daughter looks like the Statue of Liberty built on a Paris street corner, Chinese leaders bustle about setting up the future Chinese Coca Cola, Mac Donald and Hollywood. And this globalisation doesn’t save anybody. And yet, the Liu Jie’s faceless characters do not put on the same way, so globalisation is not yet perfect and a total equalisation seems difficult.

　　Liu Jie has a scenic arts background. It explains the size of his paintings, his huge brightly colored areas and his abstract images. His works emphasize the hard reality of today’s China, and according to the artist, it is hard to be pessimist when we are on the tip of the iceberg
